If your home still has single pane windows, you have a great incentive to upgrade your windows. Single pane windows are extremely inefficient. They increase your heating expenses massively. By upgrading to double-glazed windows, you can expect that draughts in your home, condensation, and heat loss will be substantially reduced during the winter months. During the summer months when it is warmer, you can expect to to notice a cool and comfortable home in the heat.

The most compelling argument for window replacement is the energy efficiency and financial savings you can obtain. Window replacement is somewhat different among home improvement projects. Window replacements will save you money each month, it does this by trapping passive solar heat, retaining heat from your heating system more efficiently and shortening fuel burning times. By upgrading windows, new improved sealing systems prevent draughts and double glazing significantly reduces heat transfer and heat loss.

An added benefit of upgrading your windows is that, by making your home more energy efficient, you also increase your property’s resale value. The likelihood that you will retrieve all costs involved in window replacement costs is very high.

Window replacement makes great sense when looking to upgrade your home. It makes it more attractive, snug and warm, energy efficient and all expenses become negated through fuel cost savings or higher resale value.

How do I protect my home?

1 Don’t advertise that you are away

  • If burglars suspect that a person is home, there is a higher chance that they won’t attempt to break in.
  • Most break-ins occur during the day while the majority of  people are working.
  • When leaving the house, try to create the illusion that the house is still occupied.
  • Try leaving an interior light on with a radio or television playing in earshot of the door.

2 Make it difficult to break in.

  • Double check to ensure that your composite doors are locked and all double glazed windows are shut.
  • All exterior doors should be fitted with deadbolt locks which are pick-resistant and ensure that exterior doors are made with solid wood or metal.
  • Don’t leave your keys in easy to find places such as, under door-mats, flower pots, window boxes, or on the door frame.
  • Check out our range of exterior security doors here.

3 Secure or replace old sliding doors

  • Some older sliding doors can be broken past by simply slipping them out of their frame, even when locked.
  • Replace with new more secure sliding doors.
  • Place a rod or bar in the track to prevent sliding door from being able to slide back.
  • Purchase a security grill to obstruct burglers who smash the glass from easy entry.
  • Check out our range of protected sliding doors here.

4 Ensure windows are protected

  • Windows should be hooked up to a home security alarm. Windows should have locks that operate from the inside so they can be used for escape.
  • Ensure that your double glazed windows are coated them with an impact-resistant film to strengthen them.
  • All double glazed windows or glass panel in the door that are closer than 42 inches to the lock should be reinforced with an invisible security film. This will prevent burglars from breaking the glass and reaching through to unlock the door.
  • Install window stops that prevent them from being opened more than 6 inches to prevent access. If you do however, all residents must know how to remove the stops to make an emergency exit.
  • Double glazed windows protected with a security film will not shatter and obstruct entry.
  • Check out our range of secure windows here.

5 Get to know your neighbours

  • The best protection for your home comes from neighbours who look out each other. Meet with your neighbours to ask them to keep an eye on things while your house is unoccupied.
  • Be vigilant for your neighbours in return.
  • Join your local neighbourhood watch or community crimewatch program, if none exist in your area, consider creating one.
  • Garda Síochána community policing officers are available to help you plan and organise such programs.
  • Contact them here.

These are just 5 ways in which you can protect your home. Ensure to lock up all your composite doors and double glazed windows every time you leave your house.

uPVC Windows: What windows should I get? – Windows Dublin

Over time our homes change. From new shades of colour  on our walls to extensions on our houses. Like the rest of the home, our windows also sometimes need to be changed. Despite  windows being an essential part of every home, they are neglected. For example, the design type, care given and  material used is all influential to how long windows will last. However the material used in a window is usually overlooked.

For years metal was the material of choice for building windows. While undoubtedly strong, without much care, eventually metal windows are just held up by rust.  In the 1960s the majority of windows were made out of wood. Though very charming, wood meant regular  maintenance and eventually decay. Thankfully, then came uPVC windows  to the rescue. It was the modern, stylish choice and was altogether less hassle. For instance uPVC windows means a lot less painting and less chance of breakage.
